Why make the Chemistry Choker and Cuff Crochet Pattern?

pink blue and silver crocheted hexagon jewelry, laid out flat

Crochet jewellery is fun to wear, inexpensive and can be made to complement all of your outfits.

it’s an easy introduction to thread crochet for those who haven’t tried it and feel a little intimidated by small hooks and thin thread. In this project you work only into chain spaces until each piece is big enough that you can hold it easily and stretch a little to see the stitches well and by that time you are also confident in where to insert the hook.

It's also very adaptable. You could easily make it in heavier yarn as a belt and make the ties shorter/longer by following the customisation instructions included in the pattern to get it just right for you.

This is a really flexible accessory that works with many different outfits for a wide range of scenarios. Wear the choker inside a white open neck collared shirt with a classic neutral colored business suit and, smart footwear to add a touch of individuality to your professional look for a day out, add it to a floral low necked dress in matching colors, with a seasonally appropriate jacket, shawl or cardigan in lieu of the cuff if it’s not the right temperature to have your arms uncovered, a cute pair of flats, and a favorite crocheted or fabric bag for a look that’s casual and reflects your personal style. It will look fun with simple shorts and a feminine camisole top for a summer’s day at home relaxing in the sunshine or having friends over for an impromptu get together. Going out somewhere special? Wear your choker with an ankle length stretch satin dress with spaghetti straps and a thigh split. Wear the cuff around your thigh so it shows through the split and add dressy high heeled sandals and a small satin clutch to complete the look.

Creating the Chemistry Choker and Cuff Crochet Pattern

Inspired by visits to the Chemistry department at the university I used to work at and the fascinating molecule diagrams on colleagues’ office whiteboards. I created this choker or belt design to appeal to those who love a small relaxing project that is sure to be a conversation starter wherever you wear it.

I worked on the sample during my children's summer holiday, so we had days out by public transport and lots of times where I was watching them in playgrounds before finally travelling to visit family for a week and it was a great travel project as it was so compact and easy to carry about or work on in the car, bus or train. The easy, repetitive stitch pattern meant I was able to carry on with my crochet whilst catching up with friends and family or watching the children enjoy the sunny weather in the parks and playgrounds we visited.

Thread and Tools

I was delighted with the thread too. I had originally asked for the classic Scheepjes thread Sweet Treat which I enjoy using for thread crochet and a member of the team at Scheepjes asked if I would like to try their new Candy Floss thread. I was so excited to try it as I could see that it looked like the perlé cotton I used to buy for embroidery with two separate shiny plies twisted together to create a lovely texture. I wasn’t disappointed. It felt lovely to handle, had great stitch definition and the texture and shine created a beautiful result.
