Create the cute Endearment Heart Washcloth from this free knitting pattern that can also be used as a placemat, coaster or trivet to protect your surfaces. It's the perfect gift for a sweet friend or family member to show them how much you care!
I realised I didn’t a washcloth pattern for knitters and thought I should put that right. They’re such fun small makes to work on between bigger projects and try out new stitches or techniques.
If you don't like reading patterns on blogs, there is also a pdf version available to purchase on Ravelry, with 20% launch discount until end of Sunday 25th January (GMT/UK time).

Why make the Endearment Heart Washcloth from this free knitting pattern?
Make this quickly to add a romantic touch to your home décor or maybe as a gift for a loved one. As a washcloth or mat, it’s equally at home in the kitchen or bathroom. Note: I consider it too lacy to be used safely as a pot-holder.

It combines a few techniques to keep your interest, with an eyelet and cable border around the garter stitch central section and a loose, strandy contrast lace edging that I think will get your soap really foamy as well as looking pretty. Plus it will get right into the corners if used as a cleaning cloth. The edging is added at the end and can be omitted if you prefer a simpler style for your heart.

Curved top sections
Place a locking marker on the middle (17th) st. Each side of this stitch is now worked separately to create the cleft in the middle of the heart, so the stitch before the marker is the last stitch for the first section.
After working R1, you may wish to place sts 18-33 on waste yarn or stitch holder. Stitch marker will act as stitch holder for marked st.
R1(WS): K1, p2, k to 3 st before end, p2, k1.
R2(RS): K3, yo, [ssk] twice, k2, [k2tog] twice, yo, k3. 2 sts dec’d

Cast off purlwise, fasten off and fasten off leaving a tail of at least 15cm/6”.
Assemble edging
Sew first and last st of final row together then second st and second last st together. See this step in my Pattern Tips Video.
Rep from R1-end on sts 18-33, leaving st 17 on stitch holder.
LACE EDGING
Worked flat around heart in a clockwise direction if knitting right handed or anti clockwise if knitting left handed.
Turn after completing each row’s instructions including the set-up before R1.
Odd numbered rows have their final st knitted together with a row end st of the Central Heart, (i.e. one of the little bumps created by the k1 edging at the end of each row).

Place st on stitch marker on needle and k1 through this stitch with CC to join.
See this stage in my Pattern Tips Video.

Rep R10-13 until 5 row end sts rem around Heart.
Tapered end
R1(RS): K to last 2, k2tog. 1 st dec’d
R2(WS): K to last st, k1 with next edge stitch.
R3-R6: Rep R1-R2 twice more. 2 sts
R7: K2tog. 1 st
R8: K1 with next edge stitch.
R9: K1.
R10: K1 with next edge stitch.
If working without hanging loop, fasten off drawing thread end through last st to secure. If working hanging loop, continue with final st on needles.
OPTIONAL HANGING LOOP
No length is given as people will have different sized hooks for their cloths. Work to your desired length. Sample has a total of 12 rows of i-cord.
Turn to RS, pick up a stitch in CC2 through top centre st (the one that was on the marker) and next st of MC (probably this is the one you attached the first row of the edging to) and work i-cord as follows:
R1(RS): Knit, do not fasten off, do not turn.
R2(RS): Slide sts to other end of needle, pull working yarn tightly behind work and knit to end, do not turn.
R3-end: Rep Row 2.
Fasten off by cutting a yarn tail, placing it on a needle and pulling it through all sts
Sew this end in front of or behind the sts that were picked up for the i-cord
FINISHING
Weave in ends and block with a good stretch to open the lace.
Make it your own
Work up in any size or weight of yarn or thread to make a coaster, Valentine’s day card, table centre mat, sew-on motif for a pullover, cute pocket for a bag or perhaps a pendant/earrings set.
Pick your own colour changes for a fun, stripy centre or match edging to centre for a single colour heart.
Omit the lace and block as it is or work any of the following instead:
Knit edging
Worked in the round, without turning around cloth.
R1: With circular needle, starting in top centre st on stitch marker, [pick up 1 st in the end of each garter ridge and cast on st around the heart.
R2: k2tog, slip resulting st on working needle back to non-working needle, rep from to end of round. 1 st rem
Fasten off, drawing yarn tail through rem st.
Crochet slip stitch in each edge st using same size hook as the needle.
UK dc / US sc in each edge st using same size hook as the needle.
