Why make yourself a shrug with the Starlit Sky Shrug knitting pattern?

A short sleeved shrug in lightweight wool is a wonderfully handy garment for warm season wear, equally good for protecting your shoulders on sunny days and those cool evenings that catch up with you unexpectedly when you’re out and about enjoying the summer weather.

Inspired by the blue tiles and threads of steam escaping through tiny starlike openings in the roof of an Istanbul hammam (Turkish bath), the square is designed to maintain the maker’s interest and keep a constant sense of making progress with its fascinating  slipstitch rows alternating at the centre with a set of eyelet rows that keep the garment light and flexible. When seamed together in alternating directions, this makes the seams appear curved, adding extra visual interest.

Crocheted square with blue and white patterns, featuring stripes and mesh sections. The background is plain white, creating a calm mood.

The square itself is versatile in being equally suitable to use in a sampler style project with other similar sized squares or as a repeated motif for an item; such as  a blanket or garment. Plus the pattern is entirely scalable so if you want a large blanket without seaming multiple squares you can simply add extra stitches and repeats  until you have the size you want for the intended project.

A garment of this type adds useful variety to the wardrobe and offers extra opportunities to wear a special handmade garment. It has a romantic, delicate look with an eye-catching and unusual textured stitch pattern reminiscent of embroidery stitches.

Now, I started designing this garment back in 2022 but soon after that I got really busy with designs that publishers commissioned me to write and as a new designer, that was an opportunity I couldn't miss out on. I picked it up whenever I had a break between designing for publications and re-releasing those published patterns myself when the publisher's exclusive publishing rights expired, so people could buy them individually but it wasn't until late in 2025 that I finished the sample and updated the pattern to reflect the changes I made as I worked on it over those three years. I'm grateful to for testing the pattern and making suggestions on how it could be clearer and easier to follow for makers.

The 4ply/sock weight Scheepjes Metropolis yarn that I chose for the square perfectly suited the textured look I wanted for the garment. It brought the texture of the knot stitches to life beautifully and allowed for the right drape, shape and structure. The yarns felt soft and easy to work with.

This shrug's intended to be a spring and summer favourite in your wardrobe. It's an ideal layering piece for warm spring days with a breathable fibre and open lace pattern and during summer it can be popped into your bag to be put on when you go inside a colder building, like the frozen food section of the supermarket or a historic building on a day out or when the sun is so strong it's making your shoulders uncomfortable. It's an easy, enjoyable to make garment that will help keep the wearer the right temperature without compromising on glamour or luxury.

There are two handy videos to support you if you're new to the knot stitch or would like a video reference for some of the assembly techniques. Take a look at the pair of videos:

If you easily get bored working on a single project, or find working the same stitch for a long period tires your hands, you'll find the way the blocks alternate between working on the knot stitch and the lace section is a great way to really enjoy a garment project. Being made in sections, this project is really portable too and I enjoyed working on the squares outside in the local park on sunny days while my children played.

Although I loved every stage of making it, you might be surprised at the part I liked best which was the seaming! Seeing it come together as a garment from a bunch of squares was amazing. It looked just as I wanted and. I'll admit I was both nervous and excited as I tried it on and then of course I was delighted with it and wore it out immediately, which I don't normally do until the pattern is available for you to buy. This time I just couldn't resist!
