Granny's Flower Basket Square Free Crochet Pattern was inspired by a basket filled with flowers from a traditional cottage garden border. It was designed for Granny Square Day 2025.
I had a lovely response to it and I was so pleased that I decided I should make this pattern available like my other granny square free crochet patterns on my website in both UK and US terminology so as many people as possible can make it.
This 4” square block is a fun make for crocheters, featuring some interesting stitches.
It could be used as a coaster or appliqué to decorate a bag or shop bought top or incorporated into a blanket or cushion with other squares. I also love sticking/stitching a single, pretty granny square on the front of a blank greetings card to send to crafty friends on special occasions.

Finishing

Weave in ends, except start tails of flowers. Surface crochet or chain stitch handle centred over any side of basket (if one side is less neat, pick this one!). Attach flowers below with start tail then use remainder for a French knot in centre of a nearby flower in a different colour and a couple of individual chain stitch petals on lower half of square. Weave in tails of embellishments. Block square.

Size
For a larger square increase/reduce the number of repeats of Border R3-R4,
Yarn choice
Any kind of yarn could be used. Using a different yarn weight with a hook that matches the manufacturer’s recommendations will result in a smaller or larger cloth. Smaller flowers could be worked in a thinner yarn than the main yarns used and added alongside or instead of the thicker yarn in theflowers for a more detailed look. Different textured yarn, e.g. a fluffy laceweight yarn could be used for some or all flowers for texture interest.
Colour changes
Use up lots of different yarn scraps to make each flower a new colour for a bold colourful square or use similar/related shades for a more subtle look.
Details
Add some green chain stitches around the flowers as leaves or add a slip stitch border to the square if it won’t be joined to other squares.
Remember that you’ll need to allow extra yarn for some changes.
