Why choose the Diamond Star Poncho crochet pattern?

The poncho is a fun and stylish addition to your mid-season wardrobe that will work equally well over jeans and pullovers or pretty spring dresses, whenever you want a little more warmth. Its perfect to add an extra layer without making you too warm. This is a design I just couldn't wait to wear and have been wearing the sample long before I could publish the pattern. In our British climate you never know when you're going to want an extra layer and having one that is this quick and easy to throw on and take off with every quirk of the day's weather is ideal.

The motifs are enjoyable and quick to make, which is very satisfying. Plus they are very portable too, if you like to take your crochet out and about. The poncho’s outer edge stitch repeat is extremely relaxing and ideal for stitching up during a favourite TV series or a good film. Confession: I was so relaxed and not really paying attention while I worked the motifs that I made 16 instead of 12! What shall I make with the spares?

Crocheted poncho with geometric pattern hangs on a tree branch in a frosty park. Clear blue sky and distant trees set a calm mood.

The inspiration for this design came from the many star shaped patchwork quilt centres I recall from enjoying patchwork as a hobby in the early 90s. I created this poncho  with a similar ring of motifs around the neckline when some of my friends got into quilting and I wanted to join in but still keep up with my yarncrafts. It's fun to combine aspects of different crafts like this.

I wanted to create both a flowing silhouette and to reflect the star shaped neckline throughout the poncho. Using increases and decreases at the corners of the motifs around the neckline the poncho works up as a softly domed shape with a slight flare to the points rather than a flat circle. I am really pleased with the end result and how it moves when I walk. Being able to put my arms through the shorter sections between the points is really handy too, especially when out with my children.

The poncho can be worn in two ways as well, either with the long points at centre fronts and over the shoulders, which gives a slight V neck effect or with the long points where the body and arms meet, both front and back, which gives a square neckline. Which do you prefer?

Choosing yarn for the Diamond Star Poncho crochet pattern

Yarn balls labeled "Rowan" in blue and white. Wooden crochet hook, vintage scissors, and sewing tools on a white surface.

I worked up the sample in Rowan Alpaca Classic and I would absolutely recommend using it if you can. It was so lovely to work with and really perfect for this particular project where drape was my main consideration. The lightness of the Alpaca worked perfectly for this but was still sturdy enough for the shoulders to hold the weight of the garment. It will also feel lovely against the skin, which is important if you're wearing it over spring tops and dresses and it's a fibre often recommended for those who don't like to wear wool.

If that's not available to you, then I would recommend holding a strand of mohair laceweight yarn with a DK wool, alpaca or similar textured yarn.

Pattern: Diamond Star Poncho

Yarn: Rowan Alpaca Classic in Deep Teal (109); Feather Grey Melange (101); Snowflake (115)
