I am really pleased to be able to let you know that my Royal Blue yoked cowl crochet pattern features in Simply Crochet Magazine issue 151. This was such a fascinating design to create, and I was really delighted to receive a copy of the issue on the release date, 3rd September 2024 and see the pattern for the set in print. The issue includes the full pattern plus a fantastic choice of of early autumn projects that are well suited to this season. Do take a look and see if your next project might be in there, especially if you are keen to get back into crafting after a summer break!

A yoked cowl is an interesting make to cosy up on cooler days over your warm weather clothing if you still have favourite pieces you don't want to put away but the weather isn't friendly to the thought of wearing them, so it extends your summer wardrobe throughout the autumn. The way the pattern is written enables it to be adjusted to fit any neckline exactly and so I think it will work well for so many different wearers and different occasions; you just need to have the intended wearer handy before fastening off to check the size. Its bold textures and fun stitches could work with a casual tee or a more formal jacket for an evening occasion too, and it's sure to be a talking point! Simply Crochet send their samples back to the designers after photographing them and I'm looking forward to having this one! It's going to be so much fun to wear.

This pattern works up quite fast and its a great project if working the same stitch over and over makes you want to put your project aside and start something new. It has plenty of different stitches so there's no chance of getting bored. In fact, I'm already itching to make another as I enjoyed making the sample so much!

It's not a difficult make but I think you may need to put your expectations about the construction out of your mind and just follow the pattern. Also there is some counting in the yoke on alternate rounds so you might want to work the first few repeats when you can focus so you don't go astray. Confession: I nearly forgot to weave in the ends of this before sending it off to the magazine. I was so excited to try it on as soon as it was complete and then I folded it up and put it aside to keep it nice and clean and away from colourful fluff of other projects and it was only as I was packing all the summer samples up to send to their office that I saw the loose ends and remembered!

I worked up the sample in in @cascadeyarns Heritage, a sock type yarn that has the fine, smooth texture necessary for the details in this design and a wonderful range of colours. The colours Royal and Indigo-Violet here are two of my favourite shades (I actually have dresses to match both of them) and were perfect contrast for each other.

Seeing the finished project in the magazine was lovely. I love the photos and the model's hair style and make-up really work well with the overall style of the cowl and its details too.
