Waterfall Shrug and Skirt Set Crochet Pattern in Crochet Foundry Magazine

short rust brown ribbed skirt with front button fastening at either side and lace frill: laid flat on grass

I am really pleased to be able to let you know that my Waterfall Shrug and Skirt Set crochet pattern features in Crochet Foundry Magazine November 2024. Making the sample for this was a real delight, and and I'm excited for the public launch of this issue on 1st November 2024. The issue includes the full pattern along with customisation tips, yarn reviews and a bonus craft idea, plus a wonderful range of beautiful projects for the cooling weather and articles on yarn related topics. Well done to editor Jessie Rayot for a fantastic issue full of tempting makes. Do take a look and see if your next project might be in there!

Why make the Waterfall Shrug and Skirt Set Crochet Pattern?

The set has a more formal style than many crochet designs and will certainly be eye-catching wherever you wear it but the individual pieces will also work well combined with other wardrobe staples as more subtle outfits. It should certainly work well throughout autumn and could be used indoors or with a coat in winter as well.

The main stitch pattern for the set is incredibly simple and makes use of bold vertical lines created with post stitches rather than complex stitch patterns to add interest, so you have a decent length of relaxing crochet to work and only need to refer to the pattern for the increases and decreases. Then you get to the most fun part: the border, rows of varied, lace stitches growing out from the vertical lines of the ribbing to create a bold, textured and ruffled edging that adds shape and movement to the close fitting garments.

Creating the Waterfall Shrug and Skirt Set Crochet Pattern

The inspiration for this set comes from a trip to visit the Cascades D'Ouzoud in Morocco during a holiday there with my husband. Recreating the downwards plummet and foamy crash of the water in crochet brings back memories of a fantastic day out with amazing scenery.

I worked up the sample in Cascade 220 Sport Superwash yarn and although I was nervous of using a superwash yarn in a skirt design, I would definitely choose to use that again if I made another. It was very soft to work with and really had a great combination of springiness and lightness that ensured the piece had a good clinginess in the ribbing section plus a light and airy lace border. It should feel nice and soft against the skin, which is ideal for clothing and it's handy for those who don't like hand washing their woollens that this can go in the washing machine.

I worked on this outdoors mostly during the summer and was surprised that it wasn't too hot to hold for long, especially as the main skirt piece grew quite large. I think because it isn't drapey, it didn't cling or feel blanket like and the pure wool was very breathable.

I was very appreciative of Technical Editor, Pia Thadani's input for this design. It was really helpful to have someone else's input on how the instructions are presented for the reader and identifying any errors beforehand. Not only was Pia Thadani knowledgeable and great at explaining any improvements, she was also very friendly and didn't make me feel silly for any errors. Seeing the finished project in the magazine preview was lovely. The colours in this issue are so rich and warm and the garments are a wonderful collection, varied and interesting. I'm thinking of making myself the beautiful cowl from the issue and I'd love to have a go at the stitch from the Coillte Pullover; what a great texture it has!
